BSA 227 – Sixth Blog

After we did some rehearsals for our shooting days, we tried a little exercise with the actors, so we can build more trust.

We got blindfolded and walk around the room, but we got controlled by actors. We did these 3 times. At the first time they didn’t say anything, the second time they touched us and told us the direction and at last they just told us where to go. After that we switched roles.

It was very fun, and we could see how we can build trust with the actors, what is very important.

To make the next steps much easier I opened a new project and create a whole new worm with the same design but did one major change. I created a skeleton to my worm.

So, from now on I can move the worm around, but don’t have to draw it every time.

Now I can spend more time to improve my animation style and can tell the story even without my less drawing skills.

Also I can save this worm in the library and can use it, even in other scenes.

After i finished the animation part for my 2D animations and included some test sounds, I exported my storyboard project into Harmony. There I had some problems with animate the hungry worm but after Michael helped me a little bit, it was easy to complete my first whole scene. After that I started to animate the second scene.

Before that I thought about some changes in my project, but after I tried a few of them I decided to stay with my original one and went back to work.

Last session, we did two very interesting exercises.

At first, we should bring a bright one colored shirt to the course. After we watched some examples for production design, we went out and take some pictures with us in the colored shirt before a good fitting Background, so we make a good production design.

In the second exercise we got blindfolded and should walk around the room, but we got controlled by other classmates. We did these 3 times. At the first time they didn’t say anything, the second time they touched us and told us the direction and at last they just told us where to go.

It was very fun, and we could see how we can built trust with maybe some actors, what is very important.

When i started my project, I thought, maybe it is hard to get a plane without money, but now I know its nearly impossible to get a plane for my music video. That’s why I thought about an alternative for that and the best option is, to make it symbolic.

For my new idea, I just need a chair, the actor and a few after effect skills. Because now I show the suffering of this anxiety in a symbolic way.

In the new scene the actor sits on a tilted chair. The Camera spins around him and in the air are some pictures of his family, and plane crashes.

Maybe I will get a plane but if not, now I have an alternative.

As part of our assignment we should help second years on their projects, so I looked out for an interesting project. After caleb presented his project in our class, I asked him if he needs help and wanted to be a part of his crew.

So, jasper, filip and I got the opportunity, to help him on his short film “Elpis”.

It was very fun to see, how this amazing idea comes to life. Jasper and I did the sound for this project and had very much fun to do that. I already did this job back in Munich, but this was a very good change to improve my skills. The Team was very friendly and very cool. The Actor was amazing too, he said that this is his second project ever, but he was very skilled for that.

In the end I am very glad that I could help on this project and looking forward to the next one.

In the last week I just concentrate to finish my animations and included the sounds in my Storyboard.

To find maybe new ways to create more sounds for my animation short film I watched a few old cartoons. One example is Tom and Jerry.

Because Tom and Jerry have no humans or any spoken word in it, I could find a few sounds with are perfectly fits in my animation film. Of course, I didn’t just copy them, but it helps me a lot to find the prefect sounds for my project.

In the last session we had to shoot a 360° environment with the help of Photoshop.

At first, we should take 3 different Panorama photos from the same location. On from the middle than with a 45-degree difference from the top and the bottom.

In Photoshop we merged the 3 panoramas and had our 360° environment.

We also started filming our VFX – Project. We shoot the Party scenes first. The one where our Protagonist meets his girlfriend the first time and have a good time with his best friend.

After we had a few problems at the beginning, it got better and the whole team did a great Job.

On the set we included a few scenes that we find tell more of the story.

In our last session we had to set up a tripod with a camera:

  1. Spread the arm of the tripod, so it isn’t in the way
  2. Spread the Legs, after you checked if they are not locked
  3. Put it in the hight you needed it to be
  4. Give it a quick overlooked, if everything is in the water spirit level
  5. Take the camera and put in on the tripod, it is important that the lens look in the same direction as one leg does
  6. Now can put on your lens (If needed)
  7.  At first you have to remove the front cover and put it back to your lens box
  8. When you know where both red dots are you can put the lens on the camera
  9. After you put the batterie in the camera, you can turn it on and set your settings

I also had a short meet with the manager of the Invercargill airport, where I want to shoot a few scenes for my music video. But he wasn’t the one who can decided that so he gave me another date, with the one who is responsible for that >

As I mentioned in my last blog entry, I was looking for a song, which fits to one of my topics. After I listened to all of the songs again, I was able to find the perfect song, for my concept:

Mandy Jeans – Planes.

My Concept:

  • A narrative music video without musical performances
  • Produktion design:
    • Costumes: Regular Outfit for a man in the 30s
      • Sets: Apartment, Inside of a plane, Bedroom
      • Location: New Zealand, Southland
      • Color: Real life (Dark Colors/ a little bit orange and green) Dreams (Dark /red) Plane (Warm bright colors)
  • Technical Treatment:
    • Camerawork: Slow camera movements, camera often close to the protagonist (to feel the anxiety), camera more far away when protagonist gets over the anxiety (he feels free)
    • Editing: low cut frequency, long shots, hard cuts

Overview:

An Ex-Pilot have to fly in a different country, to see the birth of his Daughter, but after a plane crash, he survived two years ago, he has massive fly anxiety. So he must learn to fight against those anxiety.

At first, he exercises the flight but still can`t jump over his shadow. In the end he finds a way to flight again.

To find something about the artist herself and her brand I started a research, but didn´t found much. Many Jean Black comes from Germany and study in New Zealand in audio production.

I think she is She is a kind and think full Artist. It is her Brand to read more in her songs. She wants to reach people with it and wants to show the beautiful sites of the world and the ones are not.
